In 2017, Team 1986 would create one of their best robots. This robot would go on to bring Team 1986 a Division Win at FRC Worlds. This was a full featured robot that could efficiently solve all of the challenges in the 2017 FRC Game, Steamworks.
Team 1986 opted to use a mecanum drivebase, presumably for its excellent maneuverability at the cost of more limited defense.
This robot utilized a through bumper intake that would bring Fuel high up into the robot to then drop down on top of a rotating indexer. This was done to integrate the game object flow so that Fuel could also be dropped into the indexer from Hoppers.
The rotating indexer funneled all of the Fuel to a single vertical flywheel with an adjustable hood. The adjustable hood in combination with effective sensors allowed for the robot to score Fuel accurately into the High Efficiency Goal of the Boiler from a large range of locations on the field.
The robot also had a slot for Gears to be placed on the robot. A simple gripper claw, that really was 2 flippers that moved out of the way, allowed for the robot to place Gears on the Lifts to move them to the Pilots/Human Players.
In order to climb, this robot would latch on to velcro tape and use a winch to wind up the tape.
